One of the top sixth men in the NBA, he averaged 11.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.43 steals and 31.9 minutes over 77 games, 21 starts….His 3.72 assists-to-turnover ratio ranked third in the Eastern Conference and sixth in the NBA….Among the 48 players with at least 14 double-doubles, he and Kevin Willis of the Denver Nuggets were the only players to start fewer than half their games….In his first 10 games of the season, all starts, he averaged 17.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 40.4 minutes….Registered three of his double-doubles in the first 10 games and nine in the first 26 games….Registered career-highs of 30 points (12-20 FGS, 2-5 3-pt FGS, 4-4 FTS) and 11 rebounds at Dallas, 11/2….Handed out eight assists and recorded his first points-rebounds double-double….Rrecorded another points-rebounds double-double at Vancouver, 12/1, with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists….After making 20 starts, he averaged 13.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, 11.0 assists and 38.3 minutes in the next three games off the bench….Along with Jalen Rose, they became the fourth pair of Pacers’teammates to record 400+ assists in the same season….Led or tied the team in scoring five times and assists 49 times….Leading bench scorer 30 times throughout the season….Fouled out of 10

Best got a chance to be a starter in only his second pro season after the Pacers traded away Mark Jackson and Haywoode Workman suffered a knee injury early in the season….But Indiana failed to play up to expectations, and after Best had started 46 games at point guard he was sent back to the bench after the Pacers got Jackson back from Denver….Led the Pacers with 98 steals, one more than Jackson’s total for the season, and a 1.29 average to Jackson’s 1.18….Finished as Indiana’s fifth-leading scorer at 9.9 ppg and second-leading playmaker at 4.2 apg, behind only Jackson’s league-leading 11.4 mark…. Led the Pacers in assists in 32 of his 76 games, but only three times in the 30 games after Jackson was reacquired on 2/20. His 57 three-pointers were the second-most by a Pacer, although Jackson totaled more between his two teams….Nailed a career-high three three-pointers in five separate games and scored a season-high 27 points in a 114-103 win at Philadelphia on April 4…. Scored in double figures 34 times and had 20+ points five times, but just once after 1/23.

Best earned increased playing time as his rookie season wore on, despite several veteran guards on the roster who were also vying for action…..Though he started the year as the No. 3 point guard behind Mark Jackson and Haywoode Workman, he earned the confidence of Coach Larry Brown with solid play when called upon and was part of the regular rotation for the playoffs…..Appeared in 59 games, making one start, and averaged 3.7 points and 1.6 assists in just 9.7 minutes per game….Sat out 13 games due to a sprained right ankle, nine due to a coach’s decision and one because of a league suspension because of his participation in an altercation in a game against Sacramento on 11/11….Saved his best for last, scoring a season-high 13 points in each of Indiana’s last two regular-season games….In the finale against Cleveland on April 21, he had 10 of his points in the fourth quarter when he shot 4-for-5 from the field, and had a pair of assists in the period as well. He led the Pacers with three assists in that game….Saw increased action in the playoffs, averaging 5.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 16.8 minutes in the five games against Atlanta, and was the only Pacer with at least one steal in every game…..Scored 10 points in Game 2 and had nine points, five rebounds and three assists in Game 4…..Top assist man off the bench for Indiana in 24 games, including a season-high seven assists twice, at Orlando on 11/16 and against Toronto on 3/17….Scored in double figures four times, leading the Pacers’ reserves in scoring in eight games….Shot .833 from the free throw line, one of five Pacers to shoot better than 80 percent.
